Lighting

Week 3

The smaller lights are in Satular Reporter kits.
The larger lights are in Arris' packs.

1. Most importantly, make sure the attachment is secure. Hold by the black handle and fit it on top. Screw until it is rigid.

2. Plug the circuit tester into the wall and check that the sockets are working. There should be two green lights showing, not red! Test and reset these.

3. Close in the doors on the lights to minimise the spread of the lights. Make sure gloves are worn.

4. Use the wheel to tone down the strength of the lights. Bigger lights are better to use outside, as they are outside, but the smaller lights are easier to use and so are often the preferred option.

5. There often may be a large contrast between light and dark, and so extra lights may be needed to diffuse this problem.

6. Sometimes the focus is too strong and when this happens, diffusers (paper, either single or double layers) are placed in front of the lights, by crocodile clips to make them secure. These must be metal!

7. One light is known as the key light (main light) and a second one is placed at the side of the subject, which acts as a diffuser. There may be two diffusers. A third light places a glow on the subject and distinguishes them from the background.
